Simon Ekpa Secures New Legal Counsel Ahead of Finnish Terrorism Trial
Finland-based Nigerian-Finnish separatist agitator, Simon Ekpa, has retained a new attorney, Kaarle Gummerus, in anticipation of his upcoming terrorism trial in June 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the change in legal representation became necessary following the retirement of his former counsel. Gummerus confirmed to BBC Pidgin that he has officially received the case file and is currently reviewing the pre-trial documents.
Ekpa, who holds dual citizenship in Nigeria and Finland, was arrested by Finnish authorities in November 2024. He has since been remanded by the Päijät-Häme District Court. The charges against him involve allegedly promoting terrorist activities and inciting violence through social media platforms, particularly targeting southeastern Nigeria. The Finnish government asserts that these alleged offences were committed while Ekpa was residing in Lahti in 2021.
Despite Nigeria’s appeal for his extradition, Finnish authorities have declined, citing Ekpa’s citizenship and their jurisdiction over the offences.
In a significant move earlier this year, President Bola Tinubu officially designated Simon Ekpa and 15 others as terrorism financiers under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. This came after a Nigeria Sanctions Committee meeting in March 2025.
As part of the sanctions, the Nigerian government froze all assets and financial accounts linked to the designated individuals, directing all financial institutions to report and block any transactions related to them.
Ekpa’s case continues to draw international attention amid growing concerns over online radicalization and transnational terrorism.
