Farouk Aliyu: “We Built APC, We’re Not Leaving” Amid El-Rufai’s Defection

Farouk Aliyu, a close ally of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has firmly denied reports suggesting that members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) are planning to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Aliyu clarified that the CPC bloc remains fully committed to the APC, stressing their foundational role in establishing the ruling party. “It’s simply not true that CPC members are considering leaving. Our party’s roots lie in the CPC, and there’s no question of exiting. This is our political home,” he stated.

The former lawmaker was also asked about the recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Aliyu made it clear that former President Buhari did not sanction the move. He urged El-Rufai not to overreact simply because he was not appointed as a minister. “There’s no need to cause a scene over a missed appointment,” Aliyu advised.

Despite tensions within the APC, Aliyu emphasized the need for internal unity and proactive political engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections. He encouraged the APC leadership to engage not only CPC members but also individuals from opposition groups such as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to reduce internal friction.

“Politics thrives on engagement and inclusivity,” he said. “By collaborating across factions, the APC can minimize competition and secure its dominance in 2027.”

Aliyu also issued a warning about the threat posed by a possible coalition led by PDP’s Atiku Abubakar. He labeled the alliance “a union of strange bedfellows,” and predicted that internal disagreements, especially over selecting a presidential candidate, could hinder their success.

Confident in the APC’s prospects, Aliyu concluded, “We won’t just sit back and watch a weak coalition take over. We’ll remain united and ready.”

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
