INEC Yet to Reflect Supreme Court Verdict as Abure Remains Listed Labour Party Chairman

Published

on

Despite a Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which invalidated the Court of Appeal’s recognition of Julius Abure as the Labour Party’s (LP) national chairman, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to update its official records. As of April 16, 2025, INEC’s website still displays Abure as the LP national chairman, citing a court order, along with the names of other party executives.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Supreme Court’s decision overruled earlier judgments by the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, emphasizing that internal party leadership disputes fall outside the jurisdiction of Nigerian courts. The ruling simultaneously validated the appointment of Nenadi Usman as the caretaker chairperson of the party, made in September 2024.

Justice John Okoro, who read the lead judgment, stated that the matter was a purely internal party affair and did not warrant judicial interference. The judgment has since been interpreted differently by both Abure and Usman factions, each claiming the ruling supports their stance.

Prominent lawyer Abdul Mahmud weighed in, stating that Abure’s mandate as chairman expired on March 26, 2024. Therefore, the convention in Nnewi that reaffirmed his chairmanship was not valid. Mahmud asserted that the Labour Party must revert to its leadership structure as of March 26, 2024, and organize proper congresses to elect new officials.

Despite the Supreme Court’s definitive stance, INEC has not yet revised its records. A spokesperson for the commission confirmed to Daily Sun that its legal department is currently reviewing the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment and will issue guidance on the next steps once the review is complete.
