Court Adjourns Hearing on Lawsuit Challenging Rivers LG Administrators’ Appointments
The Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has postponed the hearing of a case challenging the appointment of Local Government Administrators by Rivers State Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas. The court has set May 22, 2025, for the next hearing.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The claimant, Oyingi Imiete, informed the court that the matter was supposed to hear a motion for an interlocutory injunction. Imiete revealed that Ibas had already appointed sole administrators for all 23 Local Government Areas on April 9, 2025, allegedly after receiving the court’s order and originating processes. Imiete stated that the court bailiff had served the respondent on the same day of the appointments.
Imiete further clarified that the applicant had withdrawn the motion, which was meant for a mandatory restorative order. The respondent’s counsel contested the claim, arguing that the originating processes had not been served until two days after the appointments, and stated that the action had been completed.
Despite these developments, both parties agreed to continue with the substantive hearing of the originating summons. The court emphasized the necessity of hearing all applications, noting that the facts and issues remained within the purview of the parties involved.
The suit, filed by the PILEX Centre for Civic Education Initiative and its coordinator, Courage Nsirimovu, seeks to prevent the Sole Administrator from making such appointments, arguing that they are unconstitutional and violate the principles of democratic governance. The case will resume on May 22, 2025.
