Lagos on Edge: Major Flooding Feared as NIHSA Issues Dire Warning

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) recently raised concerns during the launch of its 2025 Annual Flood Outlook in Abuja, naming Lagos as one of the states at high risk of experiencing extreme flooding. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, stressed the urgency of the situation, advising people in vulnerable communities—such as Lekki, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Ajah, and Lagos Island—to prepare for torrential rains, high sea levels, and overwhelmed drainage systems.
Flooding is an all-too-familiar crisis for Lagosians. Over the past decade, especially since 2012, the city has endured a series of flood disasters that have wreaked havoc—submerging roads, displacing families, and bringing commercial activities to a halt. Streets like Ahmadu Bello Way and Ozumba Mbadiwe have often been rendered impassable, with residents and motorists stranded for hours in deep water.
Lekki Phase 1 resident and civil servant, Funmi Adebayo, recounted how floods ruined her household furniture, costing her over N2 million. “These seasonal alerts only deepen our sense of helplessness,” she lamented.
Media executive Kennedy Terfa, based in Victoria Island, described flooding as an annual ordeal. “We lose gadgets, time, and money. Promises from authorities rarely translate into long-term solutions,” he said.
Oniru Estate resident, Titi Balogun, added: “The anxiety never leaves during rainy months. I’m constantly checking water levels at night, fearing for my family’s safety.”
Ayo Shonibare, a commercial driver covering the Ajah–Lekki–VI route, criticized the poor drainage and road conditions. “When it rains, the city shuts down. It’s either you risk damage to your vehicle or you lose your day’s earnings,” he shared.
In response to rising public concern, the Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to managing the expected heavy rains. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during an assessment tour of the Lagos Island Urban Regeneration Project, assured that preventive measures are ongoing.
Wahab said that the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang (EFAG) has been fully deployed and will operate year-round. Their tasks include clearing blocked drains and canals while maintaining critical flood-prone zones.
“This is not business as usual,” Wahab emphasized. “Drainage clearance and urban upgrades are in full swing to safeguard residents.”
He also appealed to the public to play their part by avoiding reckless waste disposal, a key factor in drainage clogging.
