Ijaw Congress Slams ‘Barbaric’ Removal of Fubara’s Billboards in Rivers State

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has issued a scathing rebuke against the destruction and removal of billboards and official portraits of the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, denouncing the acts as “barbaric” and deliberately provocative.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Naija News, this condemnation follows widespread reports of Fubara’s images — along with those of former Obio/Akpor Local Government Chairman, Hon. Chijioke Ihunwo — being torn down across several locations in Rivers State over the weekend.

The reaction aligns with concerns raised in an open letter by the President of the Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF), Godknows Boladei Igali, who criticized the conduct of the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd). Among the grievances was the removal of Fubara’s portraits from high-profile government premises, including the Port Harcourt International Airport.

Speaking to Vanguard, INC President Professor Benjamin Okaba strongly condemned these actions, reiterating that Fubara’s suspension does not equate to a formal impeachment. “He remains the legitimate symbol of governance in Rivers State,” Okaba asserted.

Describing the destruction of the governor’s public images as “unlawful and inciting,” Okaba warned that the moves appear calculated to provoke unrest among Fubara’s supporters — possibly as a pretext to extend the ongoing state of emergency in the state.

He further criticized recent political appointments made by the sole administrator, branding them as “illegal and unconstitutional,” and called for their immediate reversal. According to Okaba, the constitutional role of a sole administrator is strictly limited to managing administrative affairs, not making legislative decisions or implementing sweeping policies.

“The attempts to draft a new budget and carry out lopsided appointments go far beyond his mandate,” he said.

When asked if these developments signal the political end for Fubara, Okaba dismissed the notion, saying, “Removing his pictures or billboards does not negate his legitimacy or potential return to power. These actions are simply provocative and unjust.”

Okaba concluded by urging the immediate dismissal of illegally appointed local government administrators and called for a halt to all efforts aimed at erasing Governor Fubara’s influence and legacy in the state.

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

Media reports had previously claimed that club officials intervened behind the scenes to restrict Haaland’s media exposure.
