In a statement signed by its Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze expressed dismay at the growing wave of violence and killings—largely attributed to suspected Fulani herdsmen—that claimed over 300 lives in the first quarter of 2025 alone.
The organization criticized the governors’ silence and what it termed their lackadaisical approach to the crisis, describing it as a failure of leadership. It cited ongoing attacks in areas such as Ehamufu and Okigwe (Enugu and Imo States), Nkalaaha (Ebonyi State), Uturu (Abia State), and Umunze (Anambra State).
Ohanaeze has vowed to invoke Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution—which permits the President to declare a state of emergency—if the governors do not act promptly to safeguard their people. The group emphasized that this action would specifically target states whose leaders are deemed ineffective.
Beyond the human toll, the organization lamented the broader socio-economic impact, noting that the insecurity has driven fear among residents, discouraged Easter homecomings, and severely undermined investor confidence in the Southeast.
It further accused the governors of failing to expel violent herdsmen and issued a 30-day deadline to take meaningful action or face national intervention.
Calling for urgent and courageous leadership, Ohanaeze urged Southeast governors to prioritize the security of lives and property, warning that continued passivity would only deepen the region’s decline.
