Presidency Dismisses US Court-Ordered FBI, DEA Reports on Tinubu as Old News
The Nigerian presidency has downplayed the significance of a recent U.S. court ruling mandating the release of documents relating to past investigations involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the presidency stated that the reports by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have been publicly available for over three decades and contain no incriminating findings against President Tinubu.
The statement was issued in response to inquiries from journalists regarding a ruling last Tuesday by a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. Judge Beryl Howell had ordered the FBI and DEA to release documents related to their historical investigations into Tinubu’s alleged involvement in drug-related activities during the 1990s.
Onanuga emphasized that the administration views the reports as old and recycled content that has long been accessible in the public domain. “There is nothing new to be revealed. The reports by Agent Moss of the FBI and the DEA have been in the public space for more than 30 years and did not indict the Nigerian leader,” Onanuga noted.
He further stated that legal experts are currently reviewing the U.S. court ruling to determine the appropriate response.
The court order was issued following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed in June 2023 by American citizen Aaron Greenspan. The suit named several U.S. government agencies, including the FBI, CIA, DEA, IRS, and the Department of State, accusing them of withholding information about Tinubu’s past.
Despite the renewed interest triggered by the court’s directive, the Nigerian government maintains that the documents present no new facts and reaffirm President Tinubu’s non-involvement in any wrongdoing.
