According to PUNCH Online, Chukwu passed away at the age of 74 in the early hours of Saturday at his residence in Enugu State. As of the time of this report, the exact cause of his death remains undisclosed.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Chukwu’s longtime friend and former teammate, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, who posted a tribute via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday.

Reacting to the loss, Sani paid glowing tribute to the former Super Eagles captain through his own X page, calling him “the best football captain in Nigeria’s history.” He praised Chukwu’s achievements during an era when Nigerian footballers rarely played abroad, noting his instrumental role in making football a national passion in the 1980s.

Sani’s post read:

“Christian Chukwu: The news of the death of the ex-Super Eagles Captain and coach is shocking. The nation has lost the best football captain in our history.
He belonged to a generation that didn’t play in Europe but still brought home trophies for Nigeria. Chukwu was a star among legends.
He made football a beloved part of Nigerian life during the 1980s. In an interview last year, he revealed that he hadn’t been paid for 19 years. Adieu, the Chairman.”

Christian Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” leaves behind a legacy as one of the finest captains and coaches in Nigerian football history.
