Nigeria Faces $9bn Loss Annually Due to Food Waste, Expert Warns
Professor John Derera, Senior Director of Breeding and Pre-Breeding at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), has expressed grave concern over Nigeria’s alarming food waste issue, estimating that 40% of food produced by farmers in the country is lost every year. This waste, he added, translates into an annual financial loss of approximately $9 billion.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released on Saturday, Derera emphasized that Nigeria has the potential to not only feed its growing population but also strengthen its economy through food exports, provided that food waste is significantly reduced. He shared these insights during his presentation at the 9th edition of the Sustainable Livelihoods and Development Network for Africa conference at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo.
Represented by Dr. Hogson Mushoruwa, Global Head of Breeding Consultative Group at IITA, Derera highlighted the economic strain caused by the country’s food importation bill, which totals around $52 billion annually. Meanwhile, approximately 40% of domestic food production is wasted, contributing to the ongoing challenges in achieving food security.
Derera advocated for a multi-faceted solution that includes infrastructural development, sustainable farming practices, and supportive governmental policies. He further urged the government to invest in improved farming techniques that would increase crop yields, thus ensuring more food for local consumption and export.
Additionally, he recommended strengthening Nigeria’s supply chain infrastructure—focusing on storage, transportation, and distribution systems—to minimize food wastage. He also called for increased government support for local food processing industries, which would add value to raw agricultural products.
Dr. Moses Adebayo, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at ACU, also spoke on the issue, highlighting how poor-quality seeds lead to crop loss. To address this, Ajayi Crowther University established ACU Seeds Limited in 2022, a seed company focused on providing high-quality seeds, including biofortified maize varieties, to help mitigate food waste.
The event concluded with a forum where approximately 500 farmers from across Nigeria discussed the challenges they face, urging the government to collaborate with qualified agricultural experts to ensure food sufficiency in the country.
