Young Africans Don’t Need Freebies But Capital – AfDB’s Akinwumi Adesina
Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has emphasized that Africa’s vast youth population is a powerful economic asset, but only if proper investments are made in human capital and financial support.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Adesina, a former Nigerian Minister of Agriculture, criticized superficial youth empowerment programs that offer minimal support. According to him, what African youths truly need is substantial capital to transform their ideas into thriving businesses.
Referring to the increasing trend of youth migration, popularly known as the “japa” syndrome, Adesina described it as a major loss for the continent. “Young people don’t need freebies or token empowerment schemes,” he said. “They need capital, and they need stakeholders willing to take financial risks on their behalf.”
Highlighting Africa’s demographic advantage, he noted that the continent is home to over 465 million young people between the ages of 15 and 35, stressing that this group should be a source of strength, not seen as a burden or ignored.
“I don’t believe the future of African youth lies in Europe, America, Canada, Japan, or China. Their future should be rooted in a flourishing Africa that creates quality jobs,” Adesina asserted.
He compared Africa’s opportunity to that of nations like India and China, which have leveraged their large populations through strategic education and employment policies. “It’s about how you equip your population,” he explained, “and turn them into drivers of economic growth.”
According to Adesina, a skilled and employed youth population can fuel economic transformation across the continent, especially by boosting domestic demand in the face of rising global trade restrictions.
