The 37-year-old Argentine legend proved once again why he remains a decisive force in world football, scoring twice—including a crucial penalty in the dying minutes—to complete a 3-2 aggregate turnaround.

Despite entering the second leg trailing 1-0 from the first encounter in California, Inter Miami faced an early scare when Aaron Long extended LAFC’s lead just nine minutes in. Given the away goals rule still in effect, Miami now had to score three goals to qualify.

Messi’s initial attempt to level the score through a quick free-kick was disallowed amid confusion, but he soon found his rhythm. Teaming up with long-time teammate Luis Suarez, Messi netted Miami’s first goal of the night in the 35th minute.

The second goal came after Noah Allen floated a pass that bypassed everyone, including goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and found the net. A disallowed goal from Suarez kept the tension alive, but the breakthrough came in the 84th minute when a VAR-confirmed handball by LAFC’s Marlon awarded Miami a penalty. Messi calmly converted it to seal the victory.

Coach Javier Mascherano, Messi’s former teammate at Barcelona and Argentina, described Messi as the “soul” of the team, praising his relentless desire to compete despite his legendary status and age.

“Messi still plays like he has everything to prove,” said Mascherano, highlighting his commitment, especially during crucial defensive plays in stoppage time.

On the other side, LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo acknowledged his team’s missed chances, saying the failure to convert opportunities cost them the match.

Although Mascherano admitted his team had room for improvement, he lauded their resilience and passion, pointing to the squad’s fighting spirit as the key factor in their triumph.

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Surpassing Competitors: Speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed confidently stated that, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke outperforms all other presidential contenders currently in the political space.

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
