Tread Carefully: APC National Vice Chair Sends Stern Warning to Atiku, El-Rufai

In an open letter that gained wide circulation, Muhammad, a current member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of NESREA’s Governing Board, advised Atiku to abandon any presidential ambitions, stating that by 2027, he would be 80 years old and should instead embrace his role as an elder statesman. He highlighted that Atiku has repeatedly run for president since 1993 and suggested that forming a new coalition would be a fruitless endeavor.
He urged Atiku not to fall for political overtures from individuals like El-Rufai who are allegedly offering him coalition options, especially given Atiku’s past involvement in controversial economic reforms such as subsidy removal and privatization during his tenure as Vice President under Olusegun Obasanjo.
Muhammad also called on El-Rufai to reconsider his decision to part ways with the APC, reminding him of his critical role as one of the party’s founding members. He referenced El-Rufai’s own past statements where he vowed to quit politics if he ever left the APC and criticized him for turning against the party when things didn’t go his way.
He warned El-Rufai against stirring political instability and baseless allegations, and argued that no serious PDP governor would defect to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as being speculated, citing lack of structure.
Garba Datti emphasized the unity and performance of the current APC leadership in Kaduna State, especially the collaborative efforts between Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Governor Uba Sani, which have led to improved development, political inclusiveness, and infrastructural gains like the N250 billion intra-city metro rail project.
He noted that the North West zone currently holds significant positions in the federal government, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Senate President, APC National Chairman, and two Service Chiefs. According to him, the Tinubu administration is steadily improving Nigeria’s economic outlook, particularly with the Naira regaining strength and food prices falling.
Muhammad concluded by advising both Atiku and El-Rufai to put national interest above personal ambition, warning that any miscalculation could lead to political irrelevance.
