Agriculture on the Rise Under Tinubu, But Gaps Remain — Minister Bagudu
Abubakar Bagudu, Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, says the agricultural sector is experiencing notable progress under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, though more still needs to be done.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at an event at the University of Ibadan on Tuesday, Bagudu highlighted that agriculture grew by 1.76% in the fourth quarter of 2024. He credited this growth to key policy interventions by the Tinubu administration, including increased budgetary allocations, access to agricultural finance, and the promotion of mechanisation and technological innovation.
“These numbers confirm that we’re moving in the right direction,” Bagudu stated, emphasizing the sector’s 25.59% contribution to Nigeria’s GDP in Q4 2024.
He noted that funding for agriculture has steadily increased since President Tinubu took office. Budgetary provisions rose from ₦228.4 billion in 2023 (1.05% of the national budget) to ₦362.94 billion in 2024 (1.32%), and further to ₦826.5 billion in 2025 (1.7%).
Bagudu also referenced initiatives such as the ₦100 billion National Agricultural Development Fund launched in 2023 to tackle funding gaps in the sector, and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s donation of 2.15 million bags of fertilizer — also valued at ₦100 billion — as major boosts to farming productivity.
While commending these achievements, Bagudu admitted that the government has yet to reach its target. “We’ve made progress, but we’re still far from where we want to be,” he said.
He underscored the importance of the newly created Ministry of Livestock Development, describing it as a strategic step to broaden agricultural potential and support economic transformation.
The Minister added that the government plans to strengthen public-private partnerships, coordinate policy implementation at the subnational level through state technical committees, and collaborate with international organizations like the FAO and WFP.
Bagudu concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda and its National Development Plan, aiming to position Nigeria as a major agricultural powerhouse on the global stage.
