Cultural Setback: Kano’s Iconic Durbar Festival Cancelled Again Amid Security Fears

Published

on

For centuries, the Kano Durbar has been a revered emblem of northern Nigeria’s cultural heritage, showcasing royal horsemen, vibrant drumming, and enthusiastic global audiences. However, for the second year running, this grand tradition has been halted.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Kano State Police Command announced the abrupt cancellation of the Sallah Durbar, citing security threats. The decision was met with widespread disappointment among tourists, cultural stakeholders, and tourism professionals.

Tourists Disappointed by Sudden Change

Over 160 international visitors, many of whom had journeyed from distant countries, arrived in Kano in anticipation of the celebrated event. Unfortunately, they were greeted with unexpected news.

Virgil Taylor, an African-American tourist, expressed his dismay:

“As a Black man from the U.S., this festival was a chance to reconnect with African roots. I planned for over a year. The cancellation was heartbreaking.”

Similarly affected was Lekan Okanlawon, a UK-based Nigerian who brought a team aiming to break a Guinness World Record for the largest horse-riding display.

“Our horses were flown in from the UK. The Durbar’s global appeal inspired us. Its sudden cancellation was a major setback.”

Economic Fallout for Local Businesses

The economic impact has been significant. Hotels, artisans, food vendors, and traders who traditionally benefit from the festival’s massive turnout have all reported substantial financial losses.

Kano-based tourism expert Yusuf Ibrahim Lajawa emphasized the broader implications:

“Durbar is a peak season for many small businesses. This isn’t just a cultural blow—it’s an economic crisis. Authorities must act to revive and secure this festival.”

Security Concerns and Government Response

Authorities justified the cancellation by pointing to intelligence reports suggesting a potential conflict due to rival emir-led processions.

“Public safety is paramount. We couldn’t risk unrest,” the police stated.

To maintain some form of celebration, the 16th Emir of Kano led a modest Eid motorcade. However, the scaled-down alternative lacked the symbolic and aesthetic richness of the Durbar, leaving spectators underwhelmed.

Call to Safeguard Heritage

Ahmad Yusuf, Executive Secretary of the Kano State History and Culture Bureau, acknowledged the disappointment while pledging efforts to protect the cultural asset.

“The Durbar represents more than tradition—it’s an economic and touristic treasure. We’re committed to its safe restoration.”

Dating back over 500 years, the Durbar is recognized by UNESCO as a key cultural heritage and has drawn global acclaim. Tourism experts warn that repeated cancellations could tarnish Kano’s status as a leading cultural destination.

Lekan Okanlawon added:

“No country showcases royal equestrian culture like Nigeria. Managed well, the Durbar could be a major global tourism magnet.”

Experts insist the time for action is now:

“The Durbar is our crown jewel. Let’s bring it back to its full glory,” Lajawa urged.
