Meningitis Outbreak: Kebbi, Sokoto, and Yobe Among Worst Hit
Nigeria has recorded 1,858 suspected cases of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) and 156 deaths across 23 states since the 2023/2024 epidemic season began. 38 cases and 14 deaths were confirmed during the most recent reporting week (ending March 23, 2025).

Meningitis causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes. It’s commonly caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi—bacterial meningitis being the deadliest. Symptoms include headache, fever, neck stiffness, confusion, and sensitivity to light.

Prompt diagnosis and treatment are vital. Delays can result in brain damage, hearing loss, or death.
