Gov Okpebholo Rallies Edo Youths to Join Army, Vows Massive Sensitisation Campaign

This commitment was made known through a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Monday. Okpebholo, represented by his Chief of Staff, Gani Audu, delivered the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Chief of Army Staff on a sensitisation tour across Niger Delta states.
The governor stressed the importance of youth involvement in military service and assured that his administration would collaborate with the Nigerian Army to deploy a dedicated outreach team across all 18 local government areas in the state. The team’s primary goal will be to ensure the state fills its recruitment quota, which has significantly lagged behind other regions.
Brigadier General Wiito Nzidee, Director of Supply and Transport Services at Army Headquarters, led the delegation, which was representing the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede. The sensitisation tour focuses on informing Niger Delta youths about the numerous opportunities within the Nigerian Army, especially the ongoing recruitment for the 89th Regular Recruit intake.
Brigadier General Ebenezer Oduyebo, Commander of the 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, who was also part of the delegation, highlighted that increasing military enlistment would not only boost national security but also provide vital employment opportunities in the region.
Despite having 2,000 slots allocated for the current intake, Edo State has only managed to register 194 recruits. This figure starkly contrasts with other states such as Kaduna (2,393), Adamawa (1,701), Bauchi (1,136), and Plateau (1,400), prompting renewed efforts by the state government to close the gap.
