Cleared Suspects in Rivers Assembly Arson Claim Pressure to Frame Fubara’s Chief of Staff

Chime Ezebalike, Kenneth Goodluck Kpasa, Macpherson Olimini, and Prince Lookman Oladele, who were detained for several months at the Kuje Correctional Facility, held a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday to deny all accusations against them. They were previously linked to the Assembly complex fire, an alleged assassination attempt on a former Speaker, and the killing of SP Bako Angbashim, a Divisional Police Officer in Ahoada East.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Ezebalike alleged that political actors aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, offered them substantial financial incentives and an all-expenses-paid trip to Ghana for themselves and their families. The alleged objective was to coerce them into falsely accusing Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of orchestrating the Assembly fire.
Ezebalike further recounted the ordeal they suffered in detention, which included torture and degrading treatment. Though they had hoped for peace after their release on bail, he revealed that fresh pressure was applied in recent weeks. A senior political figure from Obio/Akpor reportedly attempted to lure one of them into making new confessions, aligning with claims made by the former Head of Service, George Nweke.
The group emphasized that their goal was not only to clear their names but to expose abuse of power and call for justice. Ezebalike stressed that no young person in Rivers State should face the kind of “inhumane and unlawful suffering” they endured.
They appealed to civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and justice advocates to stand with them and resist the politicization of the security system, urging a halt to what they described as a targeted witch-hunt of innocent citizens.
