Global markets have been thrown into disarray following the announcement of reciprocal tariffs by US President Donald Trump. Gold prices surged to a record high above $3,160 per ounce, while the Japanese yen strengthened against the dollar, reflecting heightened investor caution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The tariffs, which impose more than a 30% increase on imports from China, have raised the total levy to 54% on Chinese goods. This move, which caught investors off guard, caused the tech sector to take a significant hit, as manufacturing hubs in China and Taiwan bore the brunt of the new tariffs.

Nasdaq futures plummeted by 4%, wiping out approximately $760 billion in market value from major tech companies known as the “Magnificent Seven.” Apple, in particular, saw its shares dip nearly 7% as the company’s reliance on Chinese manufacturing became a focal point of investor concern.

S&P 500 futures fell by 3.3%, FTSE futures by 1.8%, and European futures by almost 2%. In Asia, the Nikkei dropped 3.9% to an eight-month low, while South Korea’s Kospi decreased by 2%. Australian shares fell 2%, and Vietnam’s ETF dropped over 8% in after-hours trading.

According to Ben Wiltshire, a global rates trading strategist at Citi, the current US tariff rate on all imports is now the highest it has been in more than a century.

Meanwhile, oil prices also fell by more than 3%, bringing benchmark Brent futures to $72.56 per barrel. The Chinese yuan hit a two-month low in offshore trading as global investors anticipated further economic strain on China’s economy. Markets in Taiwan remained closed due to a holiday.

The tariff shock has triggered widespread uncertainty, with financial experts warning of prolonged volatility as global supply chains adjust to the new economic landscape.

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Surpassing Competitors: Speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed confidently stated that, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke outperforms all other presidential contenders currently in the political space.

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
