A violent windstorm has left a trail of destruction in Kwara State, particularly affecting Ilorin and the Ogele/Eyenkorin areas of Asa Local Government. According to reports from Naija News, the storm, which was accompanied by heavy rainfall, also destroyed electric cables, leading to power outages. The incident disrupted Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Ogele-Eyenkorin and nearby communities, causing significant distress among residents.

Residents reported that over 200 houses lost their roofs, while at least 20 structures, including schools, shops, and other businesses, collapsed. The storm also brought down electricity poles and wires, further compounding the community’s challenges. Debris from the storm blocked drainage at the Kuntu bridge in the Ilorin West local government area, worsening the situation.

The affected communities include Eyenkorin, Ogele, Ifelodun, Ifesowapo, Orisunbare, Odo-Akuo, Apata Ajele, Alagbado Eyenkorin, Basa, Yakoyo, and Lekki.

Several schools were among the hardest hit, with Ogele Primary School, Ansarul-Deen Primary School, and D-Light A-Nur Nursery/Primary School losing their roofs completely. Additionally, around 15 private schools, including Community Secondary School in Apata Ajele and Wilson School in Alagbado, suffered severe damage, with some classrooms collapsing. The Government Day Secondary School also lost its roof, and the baseball facilities in Adeta were affected.

As the aftermath unfolded, many residents were left homeless, with some relocating their belongings to neighbors’ houses while awaiting help from the government and kind-hearted individuals.

Expressing his concern, Zubairu Abiola, the vice chairman of the Ifelodun community in Eyenkorin, called on the state government to intervene. He noted that the storm had rendered many residents homeless and pleaded with Governor Mallam AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq to assist the affected communities, as he has often done even during less critical situations.

Local authorities and residents are now seeking urgent relief and support to help rebuild the affected areas and restore normalcy.

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Surpassing Competitors: Speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed confidently stated that, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke outperforms all other presidential contenders currently in the political space.

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
