Chief Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed concerns about Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s current leadership style. Momodu suggested that Akpabio’s leadership of the National Assembly has transformed it into a “rubber-stamp” legislature, implying that lawmakers would readily approve a third term for President Bola Tinubu if the president requested it.

He pointed out that the Nigerian presidency is one of the most powerful offices globally, describing it as more powerful than that of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Momodu noted that Akpabio’s apparent fear might be rooted in the overwhelming power the presidency wields.

Reflecting on Akpabio’s tenure as governor, Momodu praised his achievements but questioned his current stance as Senate President. He insinuated that Akpabio’s current behavior might stem from a desire to stay in the good graces of the presidency.

Momodu’s remarks have sparked reactions, especially regarding his assertion that the current National Assembly would approve a third term for Tinubu within minutes if proposed.

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions.
