Senator John Azuta-Mbata was elected as the 13th President-General during an election held in Enugu on Friday. A former senator representing Rivers East from 1999 to 2007, Azuta-Mbata succeeded Fidelis Chukwu, whose term had ended. His election is significant, as he hails from Rivers State in South-South Nigeria.
In a separate development, Dim Uche Nnam Okwukwu, a prominent activist and lawyer, was also declared the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide during the organisation’s convention in Port Harcourt. Okwukwu’s election came after a process led by the progressive movement in Igboland, and he was declared unopposed by the returning officer, Achi Achi.
The simultaneous declarations of both leaders have created a leadership conflict within Ohanaeze, leaving the organisation in a state of uncertainty. The General Assembly endorsed Okwukwu’s victory, citing his commitment to defending Igbo interests and upholding Ohanaeze’s constitution.
