Fake Protest Claims Against Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles Appointment Denied By NANS
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has refuted reports of a planned protest against the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The statement dismissed the allegations made by Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, who falsely claimed to be the Clerk of NANS Senate and threatened a nationwide protest regarding Chelle’s appointment. NANS emphasized that the statement did not reflect the position of Nigerian students.
NANS condemned the fraudulent claims, urging the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to disregard the protest threat. The leadership also expressed disappointment in media outlets that published the unverified report without proper fact-checking.
The statement stressed that the person making the claims held no official role within the student association and urged security agencies to investigate the matter for impersonation and attempts to incite unrest. It also called for the media to adhere to journalistic standards and verify the authenticity of sources before amplifying such claims.
Regarding Chelle’s appointment, NANS affirmed the NFF’s right to make decisions in the best interest of Nigerian football and called for expanded talent searches on Nigerian campuses. The student body urged the NFF to continue developing local football talent and investing in the future of the sport.
NANS concluded by stating that no official branch of the association had supported or planned any protest against Chelle’s appointment and that the claims were the work of impostors with dubious motives.
