The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has shared his stance on domestic violence, advising his daughters to defend themselves if subjected to abuse by their husbands. The conference, titled “Islamic Teachings and Community Collaboration for Ending Gender-Based Violence,” was organized by the Centre for Islamic Civilisation and Interfaith Dialogue (CICID), Bayero University Kano (BUK), and supported by the Ford Foundation.

Sanusi explained that while Islamic law permits a “light” form of physical discipline in marriage, this is often misused, leading to severe abuse. He cited his research, which showed that many domestic violence cases involved severe harm, including broken limbs, knocked-out teeth, and persistent beatings with sticks. He stressed that such violence is not only a crime but also prohibited in Islam.

“I always tell my daughters, if your husband slaps you and you come home to report it without first slapping him back, I will slap you myself,” Sanusi said, adding that he would never send his daughter into a marriage where she could be mistreated. He emphasized that women must be taught not to tolerate abuse and that boys should be raised to understand that violence against anyone, including wives, is unacceptable.

Sanusi reiterated that all forms of violence violate human dignity, stressing that such behavior must be eradicated from society.
