FG Tackles Irregular Migration Challenges, Pledges Support For Migrants’ Rights
The Nigerian government has praised the significant impact of Nigerian immigrants on the global economy. Speaking on Monday at the 10th Annual National Migration Dialogue, themed “Beyond Borders: Celebrating Migrants’ Legacy, Protecting Their Rights,” held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima emphasized Nigeria’s leadership in diaspora remittances within West Africa.
“Migration is not just a geographical shift; it’s a key driver of global and national progress. In 2022, Nigeria received $21.9 billion in remittances, representing 64% of West Africa’s total remittances. This showcases the immense economic contributions of Nigerian migrants,” he stated. He also noted that Nigerian-founded startups abroad secured over $800 million in investments in 2022.
Shettima reflected on migration’s dual role: its positive societal contributions and the critical need to protect migrants’ rights. He reminded that Nigeria is both a source and destination for migrants, with over 1.3 million international migrants residing within the country. However, he acknowledged the persistent challenges posed by irregular migration, noting the return of 10,000 Nigerians detained for migration offenses in 2024.
Despite these challenges, Shettima assured that the Nigerian government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to addressing migration issues, a commitment reinforced at the United Nations General Assembly this year. He highlighted efforts by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, alongside the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), to improve migration management through innovative measures, including e-gates at airports, the rollout of e-passports, and expanded access to Nigerian visas through online platforms.
Shettima also emphasized Nigeria’s collaborations with international organizations like the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which have played a vital role in improving migration governance.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, described the Nigerian diaspora as representing the best of the global community—hard-working, brilliant, and key contributors to developing economies. She stressed the importance of addressing irregular migration to prevent tragic loss of life among Africans seeking better opportunities.
Professor Muhammed Tawfiq Ladan, Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, in his keynote address, emphasized that migrants are entitled to fundamental human rights and that Nigerians abroad contribute significantly to the economies they join, characterized by resilience, skills, and excellence.

The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.

Suspicious Circumstances: Raising questions about the sudden deaths, Nasera noted that the detainees had eaten well the day before, speculating that heat exposure or some form of administered substance may have been involved.
