Rivers Politics Erupt As Wike, Fubara Loyalists Clash Over Arson Investigation
On Wednesday, supporters of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and those of former Governor Nyesom Wike exchanged sharp words as the commission of inquiry into the arson of local government secretariats concluded its hearings. The inquiry stemmed from the fires that destroyed three secretariats on October 7, which were a result of the violence following the controversial October 5 local government elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The seven-member panel, headed by Justice Ibiwengi Minakiri, had called on key individuals, including Wike and Tony Okocha, the Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in Rivers State. However, neither attended the inquiry. Former local government chairmen from Ikwerre, Obio/Akpor, Ahoada West, and Eleme also failed to show up.
Tony Okocha dismissed the inquiry as a “political witch-hunt,” asserting that he had not received a formal invitation. “I’m too important to fall for that trap,” he said.
Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson, expressed disappointment over the absences, calling them unfortunate. Despite the lack of participation, Justice Minakiri confirmed that the panel would proceed with its investigation and submit its findings.
Wike, who was also invited through courier services and newspaper ads, did not respond. In response, Okocha claimed ignorance of the inquiry, attributing his absence to a recent trip to China and ongoing APC congresses. He criticized the legitimacy of the panel and its method of invitation via newspaper ads.
He also called for a more balanced inquiry, suggesting investigations into last year’s bombing of the State House of Assembly and the attack on the APC secretariat. “This is a political witch-hunt, and I have no involvement in it,” he declared.
Joseph Johnson countered Okocha’s statements, insisting that the inquiry would continue regardless of the absences and that its findings would be submitted.
