PDP Governors Set To Meet In Jos Ahead Of Critical NEC Meeting
On Saturday, governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will convene in Jos, Plateau State, to resolve internal conflicts and review the current political landscape. A senior party official, who requested anonymity, confirmed to Punch that acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, National Secretary Sam Anyanwu, and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) have been invited to attend.
The 98th NEC meeting in April had outlined key actions, including the creation of a reconciliation and disciplinary committee, the conduct of ward and state congresses, and a discussion within the North Central caucus regarding the national chairmanship position. However, progress has stalled due to deepening internal divisions, resulting in several postponements of the 99th NEC meeting, initially planned for August 15.
Since its defeat in the 2023 general elections, the PDP has struggled with mounting internal challenges, including setbacks in the Edo and Ondo governorship elections, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) triumphed. Calls for a leadership overhaul have grown louder, with some party members urging Damagum to step down for new leadership capable of reinvigorating the party.
However, a faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory continues to back Damagum, who has been filling in for the ousted national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
According to a party insider, the meeting in Jos will set the agenda for the 99th NEC meeting and could play a pivotal role in determining the party’s direction. “The outcome of the meeting in Jos will influence whether the NEC proceeds as planned and shape the tone for the gathering,” the source stated. The governors will also discuss off-cycle elections, including the losses in Edo and Ondo, as well as pressing national issues.
