Nigeria’s National Identification Numbers Surge to 110 Million....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that the number of Nigerians with National Identification Numbers (NIN) has now reached an impressive 110 million. This figure represents a 2.39% increase from the 107.34 million recorded at the end of May 2024.

NIMC’s Director General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, revealed this significant milestone during the sixth edition of the National Day of Identity event, themed “Digital Public Infrastructure: Enabling Access to Services,” held in Abuja. She emphasized that this achievement is a result of the strategic plans executed by the current NIMC management.

Coker-Odusote highlighted the critical role that Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) plays in Nigeria’s economic development. She stated, “The role of DPI has become indispensable to Nigeria’s economic development, as it offers a framework that connects citizens to essential services such as social welfare, healthcare, education, and financial inclusion.”

With over 110 million Nigerians enrolled, the NIMC is at the forefront of this transformative journey, facilitating access to vital services that enhance the quality of life for citizens.

The Director General further explained that the digital infrastructure established by NIMC has supported both the government and financial institutions in various areas, including digital payments, digital identity, and digital processes. This robust infrastructure not only streamlines services but also strengthens the overall economy.

A prime example of the impact of DPI is the Student Loan Initiative, which has successfully collaborated with 257 institutions. The initiative has registered 332,715 students for loans and facilitated payments for over 18,000 students. Coker-Odusote noted, “This showcases how DPI can eliminate financial barriers to education.”

The NIMC Director General stressed the importance of collaboration between government agencies and private sector players in achieving these goals. Efforts such as linking NINs with phone numbers through telecommunication companies and harmonizing NIN with Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) have been instrumental in facilitating digital transactions.
