Popular actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli has opened up about her early career experiences, revealing how she often traded her scripts for acting roles. In a recent interview on Radionow FM, she shared her inspiration for transitioning from acting to directing, highlighting her desire to bring her creative vision to life.

Omoni explained that as she began her career, she realized her ideas weren’t fully realized in the films she starred in. “I was trading my scripts for movie roles,” she said. “I’d say, ‘You know what, don’t pay me; just give me a role in the film.'”

However, after watching the final products, she often found them to be different from what she had envisioned. “When I’m watching the movie, it’s so different from what I had in my head when I was writing because I write in pictures,” she noted. While she acknowledged that different directors interpret scripts in their own unique ways, she felt a strong urge to ensure her stories retained her personal touch. “If my stories are going to have my DNA, then I’m going to have to direct them myself,” she added.

The thought of directing was daunting for her, but Omoni found motivation in her roots. “Warri no dey carry lass na. Wetin dem get wey I no get?” she recalled, expressing her determination to pursue this new path.

To gain the necessary skills, Omoni began to study the craft of directing closely. “I started understudying directors; I’m acting on set, but I am watching the director closely,” she shared. Realizing the need for formal education, she took a significant step by enrolling in a short course at the New York Film Academy.
