The Defence Headquarters has issued a resolute promise to continue the search for the killers of 17 officers and soldiers who tragically lost their lives while on a legitimate mission in the Delta State community. This commitment was emphasized by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa during a media briefing that followed a joint meeting of military, police, and paramilitary security forces in Abuja.
A Strong Message of Resolve
General Musa, represented by Major General Emeka Onumajuru, the Chief of Defence Training and Operation, addressed concerns about the recent violence in Okuama. He asserted, “The killing of 17 personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria will not go unpunished.” Drawing a parallel to the lengthy pursuit of notorious terrorist Osama Bin Laden, he assured the public that the military is fully committed to identifying and apprehending those responsible for this heinous act. “No matter how long it takes, we will hunt them down,” he stated firmly.
Reevaluating Military Operations
The CDS also discussed ongoing efforts to enhance military operations in the North West Zone of Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of improving coordination among various security operations. The aim is to unify these efforts under a single commander to increase effectiveness in combating the ongoing threat of terrorism.
Community Involvement and Responsibility
During the briefing, General Onumajuru called upon communities in the North West to refrain from aiding or providing information to terrorists. He noted a troubling incident where local informants compromised military operations. When troops encountered difficulties with their Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle in a swamp, it was members of the community who relayed this information to the terrorists. He urged residents, saying, “Please do not give them any support. Do not give them information on the movement of troops.”
