DSS Clarifies Visit to SERAP Office Amid Allegations of Harassment....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Department of State Services (DSS) has addressed concerns regarding its visit to the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Monday. Contrary to widespread reports suggesting a raid, the DSS clarified that its officers were there for a routine investigation, not to intimidate or harass the organization.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the DSS emphasized that the visit was lawful and part of standard procedures. The agency explained that the situation was being misrepresented as an unlawful invasion, creating unnecessary alarm. The DSS noted, “A team of two unarmed Service operatives were lawfully detailed on a routine investigation to the SERAP office in Abuja, which has sadly been skewed and misinterpreted as unlawful, harassment, and intimidation of SERAP officials.”
The statement continued, stressing that such investigations are routine and in line with the DSS’s mandate, urging the public to disregard the misleading narrative. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and called for greater citizen involvement in national security efforts.
However, SERAP responded strongly to the visit, condemning it as an invasion. The organization issued a statement through its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, calling on President Bola Tinubu to immediately direct the DSS to stop what they described as harassment and intimidation of their staff. Oluwadare highlighted concerns about the increasing pressure on human rights organizations in Nigeria, stating, “The escalating crackdown on human rights, and harassment and intimidation of NGOs and human rights defenders that have shown astonishing courage in their human rights work hurt those most in need and contribute to a culture of impunity.”
