The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has taken aim at the leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso, for his recent criticisms regarding the Federal Government’s approach to distributing food palliatives. In a statement shared on his social media account, APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to alleviating hunger while accusing the NNPP-led state government of hindering these efforts.

Abbas defended the distribution strategy, highlighting the bipartisan committee led by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin. This committee includes members from various political parties, including the APC, NNPP, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and others. He noted that the committee’s detailed plan aims to ensure that palliatives reach the most vulnerable populations and prevent any misappropriation.

The chairman pointed out that the decision to change the distribution method was influenced by President Bola Tinubu’s concerns over past distribution failures. He alleged that previous attempts saw commodities diverted by those responsible for their distribution. Abbas stated, “The scandalous escapades that enmeshed senior officials of the NNPP government highlighted how the palliatives failed to reach the targeted poor and vulnerable.”

Abbas further criticized the management of palliative distributions, accusing Dr. Tukur Dayyabu Minjibir, the Managing Director of the Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), of inappropriately selling state grains. Additionally, a Senior Special Assistant to the Cabinet Office was arrested for similar diversion allegations.

The APC chairman revealed troubling incidents, such as a significant amount of rice designated for the poor being looted from the private residence of the Chief of Staff at the Kano Government House, which is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

In response to Kwankwaso’s claims that the Federal Government undermined democracy by excluding Kano from the recent rice distribution, Abbas challenged him to launch an investigation into these alleged misdeeds and ensure accountability.

Abbas also criticized the quality of meals provided during the 2024 Annual Ramadan Feeding Programme, which prompted Governor Abba Yusuf to express a lack of confidence in those responsible.

On the topic of the recent postings of Department of State Service directors, Abbas stated that these decisions reflect President Tinubu’s commitment to appointing diligent security heads to Kano. He highlighted that Kano experienced relative peace during the previous administration but attributed current insecurity to the NNPP government, which he claimed encouraged violent youth behavior.
