Governor Alex Otti Dispels Rumors of Worker Retrenchment in Abia State....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reassured civil servants that there are no plans to lay off workers in the state. During a media chat on Friday in Umuahia, Otti firmly dismissed rumors of mass retrenchment, affirming his administration’s commitment to enhancing the state’s civil service for optimal productivity.
Otti emphasized that the timely payment of salaries has significantly improved efficiency within the civil service. “I don’t know where that is coming from. There is nothing like mass retrenchment. We have not even thought about it. There’s nothing in the pipeline,” Otti stated.
The governor reassured workers that his administration has no plans to implement any form of staff downsizing, adding, “We will continue to ensure that our civil service is enhanced and productivity goes up, particularly now that before the end of every month they (civil servants) get paid, so there is no excuse for truancy anymore.”
Addressing Truancy in the Civil Service
Governor Otti addressed concerns that the fear of retrenchment may stem from guilt among certain workers with poor work habits. He warned that absenteeism and other forms of truancy would no longer be tolerated under his leadership, emphasizing that the improved payment structure leaves no room for such behavior.
“People who were used to not going to work, we told them to know that our administration does not tolerate truancy and so if they are afraid, maybe, they are guilty. There’s no mass retrenchment in the pipeline,” he added.
Re-engagement of Disengaged Workers
Otti also spoke on the issue of non-indigene workers who were previously disengaged under past administrations. He expressed satisfaction that several of those affected have already been re-engaged. Additionally, his administration is actively reviewing the cases of the remaining workers with the intention of reintegrating them into the state workforce.
“As a person, I believe that people should not be judged or treated fairly or unfairly based on where they come from,” Otti stressed. He highlighted that his administration is committed to a non-discriminatory policy, ensuring equal treatment for all residents of Abia, regardless of their place of origin.
Commitment to Equality
Otti reaffirmed that individuals living and contributing to the state’s development, regardless of their origin, will be considered part of Abia. “Once you live in Abia, you are from Abia. You live here, you pay your tax here, you are involved in everything that we are doing, then we must treat you as part of us. This is a government that does not discriminate.”
His administration is currently reviewing cases of the few remaining disengaged workers, with a positive outlook on reintegrating those still with the state. “We are looking at those few cases. They’re not much. There is not much we can do about those who are not here with us (deceased), but those with us, we will look at their cases positively,” Otti concluded.
