At least eight people were confirmed dead on Wednesday following two separate attacks by gunmen in the Congo and Zarap communities within the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. Among the victims was Kenneth Kadish, a member of the Community Peace Service in Bokkos LG.
Reports indicate that one of the attacks occurred around 7 p.m. near the market in the Congo community, shortly after the market had closed for the day. Six individuals died instantly in this attack, while two others were killed in the neighboring Zarap community.
Kefas Mallai, Chairman of the Community Peace Service in Bokkos LGA, confirmed the incidents to The PUNCH in Jos on Wednesday. “Some armed men just came to the Angwa community and Zarap community and attacked the people on Tuesday night around 7 p.m. Nobody expected that there would be any attack on the people who are struggling to put behind them the ugly experiences of previous attacks,” Mallai stated.
He described the chaotic scene in the Angwa Congo community, where residents were relaxing after market day when armed assailants opened fire. “Six persons died instantly while some were injured. Among them was my member of peace ambassador, Kenneth Kadish, who is a member of the Community Peace Service in Bokkos LGA,” Mallai added.
In the Zarap community, gunmen on motorbikes shot at two individuals standing in front of their homes, resulting in their deaths. The chairman condemned the attacks and emphasized that they had been reported to security agents.
“We have reported the attacks to the security agents because the place where the attack on the Angwa Congo community took place was not far from the security checkpoint. They have come to check the place, and I think they have started their investigation to identify those responsible and apprehend them,” he explained.
Attempts to reach the spokesman for the Plateau Police Command, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone was switched off at the time.
