Peter Obi Condemns Anti-Yoruba and Benin Threats, Urges Nigerians to Reject Tribalism

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has strongly condemned the threatening remarks made by a Canada-based woman, Amaka Sunnberger, against Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin descent. The disturbing comments surfaced in a viral video on X.com, where the woman, speaking in Pidgin English during a TikTok meeting, threatened to poison individuals from these ethnic groups.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The incident sparked widespread outrage, leading Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, to reveal the woman’s identity. The House of Representatives also called for her immediate arrest in response to the threats.

Reacting to the situation, Obi took to his X handle on Friday morning to denounce the divisive comments, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in society. The former Governor of Anambra State urged Nigerians to reject tribalism and focus on addressing the country’s shared challenges.

“I utterly condemn the reported hateful statement and actions attributed to a Nigerian woman living in Canada against other Nigerians of diverse origins. Such divisive comments or behaviour have no place in our society,” Obi stated.

He continued, “As Nigerians, we should unite and focus on addressing our shared challenges rather than allowing tribalism and hate to tear us apart. I have consistently stood against the polarisation of our country along tribal, religious or political lines.”

Obi questioned the value of tribal and religious bigotry, pointing out that it does nothing to solve the nation’s pressing issues such as health, education, poverty, or infrastructure. “Does it improve our transportation system or enhance the electricity supply? Does it ensure good governance? The answer is a resounding NO!!” he asserted.

Calling for unity, Obi urged Nigerians to prioritize integrity, competence, and character in leadership to overcome the country’s current challenges. He concluded, “We must reject tribalism and religious division and embrace our shared humanity, working together towards a new Nigeria that is possible!”

Ahmad made the assertion in a post on his X handle, maintaining that Kwankwaso’s decision to accept the position of running mate should be seen as an act of political modesty rather than an indication that he is less qualified than Obi.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to the former presidential aide, the relationship between the two politicians should be viewed as one of equals rather than that of a superior and a subordinate.

“To be entirely candid, the political dynamic between Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi ought to be characterised as one of collegiality between peers, rather than a hierarchy of principal and subordinate,” he wrote.

He added, “The choice to assume a deputy role beneath Obi ought to be interpreted as a testament to political modesty.”

Making a case for Kwankwaso’s political experience, Ahmad recalled that the former Kano State governor served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives before Obi became a prominent figure in national politics.

He also noted that Kwankwaso governed Kano State, which he described as Nigeria’s most populous and politically influential state, for two terms and served as a federal minister.

“If we are assessing political experience, Sen. Kwankwaso probably has a longer and more impressive political background than Peter Obi,” Ahmad stated.

In contrast, the former presidential aide argued that Obi’s major public office experience was limited to his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

“Unlike other candidates, Peter Obi was just a former governor of Anambra State,” he wrote.
