UNILAG Plunged into Darkness as Eko DisCo Cuts Power Over Unpaid Bills
The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has been disconnected from the national power grid by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) due to unpaid electricity bills. This sudden blackout has caused significant disruption on campus, sparking concern among students and staff.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The disconnection was confirmed by the university management in a statement released on Wednesday. The institution has been grappling with escalating electricity costs, a challenge exacerbated when EKEDC upgraded UNILAG’s tariff category from “Band B” to “Band A.” This change led to a substantial increase in the university’s monthly electricity bills.
Before the tariff upgrade, UNILAG was paying between N150 million and N180 million per month for electricity. However, the June bill under the new “Band A” tariff nearly doubled, soaring to almost N300 million. The university has struggled to cope with this 100% increase, which has further strained its financial resources.
Despite ongoing negotiations with EKEDC and a recent payment of N180 million on August 20, the university’s power supply was abruptly cut off on August 27, without prior notice. The university management expressed regret over the disconnection, noting that it came just two weeks after a meeting with EKEDC, during which they received a staggering bill of N472 million for July, further increasing the institution’s debt burden.
In their statement, the management assured the university community that efforts are being made to resolve the issue with EKEDC. They called for calm and announced that power supply across the campus would be rationed until further notice.
