Ex-Buhari Aide Calls for Stricter Regulation of TikTok, Citing Increased Criminal Activity
Bashir Ahmed, a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has raised alarms over the growing influence of the social media platform TikTok in Nigeria, arguing that it is doing more harm than good. According to Ahmed, the platform is increasingly being used by criminal elements, including bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists, to reach and manipulate the public, necessitating stricter regulation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a post on his X.com account late Wednesday, Ahmed expressed concern over how TikTok’s open platform is allowing criminals to spread misinformation and propaganda with ease. “It is alarming that TikTok, a global social media platform, is being utilised by criminals such as bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists in Nigeria to interact with the public and, in some cases, even engage in live conversations defending their heinous activities,” Ahmed stated.
He further emphasized that the platform is emboldening these criminals by giving them a space to amplify their voices, adding that stricter regulations and content monitoring are necessary to curb the misuse of TikTok in Nigeria. “Nigeria needs stricter regulations and content monitoring on TikTok to prevent these dangerous individuals from using it for their malicious agendas,” he added.
This call for regulation comes amid growing concerns about the content being shared on TikTok, including viral videos showing bandits flaunting cash allegedly collected as ransom. These videos have sparked outrage, with counter-insurgency expert and security analyst Zagazola Makama highlighting the dangers posed by such content in a series of posts on his X account.
During Buhari’s tenure, the Federal Government banned Twitter, now X, in Nigeria for 222 days, following the platform’s decision to delete a tweet by Buhari. The ban, which was lifted in January 2022, was seen as a significant move to control the narrative on social media platforms.
