Dr. Usman Hayatu-Mazadu, the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), addressed the media on Tuesday night, highlighting the proactive measures the state government has taken to mitigate the impact of the flood. These measures include desilting drainage systems and conducting extensive sensitization campaigns. However, despite these efforts, many residents did not heed the warnings and refused to relocate, exacerbating the destruction caused by the flood.
Mazadu emphasized that cooperation from residents is crucial to ensure their safety and prevent further damage. He urged residents, especially farmers, to take advantage of alternative land provided by the state government and relocate to safer urban centers.
“I am here today to address the recent devastating flood that affected Sabon-Gari and Zaria Local Government Areas. Despite our efforts to mitigate the impact, the flood has caused significant damage, with over 200 houses destroyed,” Mazadu stated. He further explained that the state had received early warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) three months ago and had taken proactive steps to prepare for the flood.
The assessment by SEMA identified three major issues contributing to the flood: inadequate drainage systems, the improper disposal of refuse, and the construction of structures within waterways. The governor responded to these findings by directing stakeholders to undertake a statewide desilting of old drainage systems, which has been completed, minimizing the flood’s impact in other predicted areas.
Despite these efforts, Mazadu expressed disappointment that some residents ignored evacuation warnings, leading to unnecessary loss of property. He stressed the importance of understanding the value of life and urged residents to prioritize their safety over personal preferences, such as remaining in flood-prone areas for farming.
Mazadu warned that the rainy season would be longer than usual this year, increasing the risk of further flooding across the state. The state government has already established camps for those affected, providing food, non-food items, and security to ensure their well-being.
He concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens but stressed that residents must also take responsibility for their safety. “I appeal to the citizens of Kaduna State to cooperate with the government in ensuring their safety. We must understand that the issue of security and safety is not just the responsibility of the government, but also that of individuals. Let us work together to prevent further disasters,” Mazadu added.
