The Anambra State Government has taken decisive action by ordering the immediate closure of Upcoming Star International School in Awka, following allegations of bullying that resulted in a serious injury to a seven-year-old pupil. The announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, in a statement released late Tuesday.
This decision stems from a report indicating that the pupil’s classmate allegedly broke her leg due to bullying. Prof. Chuma-Udeh explained that upon inviting the school’s proprietor, Uche Onyeachona, for questioning, it was revealed that the school was operating without official approval from the state government.
“The pupil was bullied by her classmate, which caused her to break her leg, and the matter was reported to the ministry,” Chuma-Udeh stated. During the questioning, Onyeachona acknowledged that the bullying incident took place within his school’s premises.
In light of these findings, Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo ordered the school to be sealed by 2 PM that day. The commissioner emphasized that the presence of unapproved schools poses a significant risk to children’s safety and well-being in the state.
Chuma-Udeh urged parents to refrain from enrolling their children in unapproved institutions and warned that proprietors of illegal schools would face legal consequences for violating state regulations.
