Government Allocates N3 Billion to Tackle Flooding and Ecological Challenges....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Amid growing concerns about transparency and accountability in managing ecological funds, the Federal Government of Nigeria has committed to providing N3 billion to assist states in mitigating the impacts of recent flood disasters. This initiative aims to support local governments in their efforts to address flooding and other environmental challenges.

Despite facing criticism regarding the management of ecological funds, the government is determined to offer financial assistance to help states combat ecological issues and alleviate the suffering of affected communities. The commitment comes in the wake of devastating floods that struck Nigeria in 2022, leading to significant loss of life and property.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari previously criticized states for alleged corruption in managing these ecological funds, urging them to provide proper accounting for their usage. A report by SaharaReporters in 2022 highlighted concerns when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused the then-Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu of misappropriating N2 billion intended for ecological projects to fund his political campaigns.

Despite receiving substantial ecological funds, many states have been ineffective in allocating resources for erosion and flooding control, resulting in ongoing loss of life and property. Between 2021 and 2022, states received N64 billion in ecological funds, followed by an additional N34 billion allocated between September 2023 and April 2024. However, budget performance documents reveal that these funds have not been effectively utilized for their intended purposes.

In a recent announcement, Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, shared the government’s decision to allocate an additional N3 billion in ecological funding while addressing journalists in Kebbi State. He stated, “I would like to announce that the National Economic Council has proactively decided to allocate N3 billion to support all states across the federation and the FCT in mitigating the effects of flooding this year.”

Edun emphasized that this funding would enable states like Kebbi to prepare farmers for crucial dry season farming, which is anticipated to be successful and well-implemented. He also expressed hope that the initiative would lead to increased food availability at reasonable prices, helping to lower inflation and stabilize the economy.

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting states in maintaining security, enhancing resilience, and boosting productivity, ultimately solidifying Nigeria’s status as a food basket.

Senator Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, voiced concerns about the severe impact of flooding on many local governments during a recent visit. Despite the funding received, many states have struggled to invest adequately in erosion and flooding control, highlighting the ongoing challenges in managing ecological funds effectively.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has adjusted its gantry price for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), lowering it from ₦1,275 to ₦1,250 per litre, marking a two per cent reduction. This price shift is attributed to a decline in international crude oil prices, which serve as the refinery’s primary feedstock.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    An official from the refinery noted that such adjustments are expected in a deregulated market and emphasized that the company will continue to calibrate prices based on evolving market conditions. Despite this move, current retail prices at many filling stations across Nigeria remain above ₦1,350 per litre, with costs varying by location and marketer.Beyond pricing, the refinery has been credited as a key driver of Nigeria’s improving economic outlook. S&P Global Ratings recently upgraded the country’s long-term foreign- and local-currency sovereign credit ratings from “B-” to “B,” citing factors such as stronger economic growth, increased oil production, and improved external balances. S&P specifically highlighted the operational ramp-up of the Dangote refinery’s 650,000-barrel-per-day facility as a significant contributor to the nation’s enhanced balance-of-payments position and overall economic resilience.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A political war of words has erupted between former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The friction began when Kwankwaso, speaking at his Kano residence, insisted that prominent politicians—including Ganduje—owe their political rise to his mentorship and cannot deny their past loyalty to him. Ganduje, currently performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, responded through his chief of staff, Muhammad Garba, by asserting that Kwankwaso was actually his own protégé. Ganduje highlighted his role in Kwankwaso’s early career, including his support during Kwankwaso’s rise to the House of Representatives and his decision to step down as a gubernatorial candidate in 1998 to serve as Kwankwaso’s deputy.
