Crisis Deepens in Benue APC as Dissolved Exco Nominates Candidates Amid Legal Battle
The turmoil within the Benue chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) escalated on Monday after the dissolved Austin Agada-led executive announced its slate of candidates for the upcoming local government elections. This move comes just days after the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, faced legal challenges for dismissing the Agada-led committee.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
On Saturday, the primary elections were held across all wards in the 23 local government areas of Benue State. Despite a court order restraining Ganduje’s National Working Committee (NWC) from making changes, the Agada-led faction proceeded with nominating 23 chairmanship and 276 councillorship candidates.
The Benue High Court had earlier issued an ex parte order, granted by Justice Theresa Igoche in motion No MH /1585m/2024, which prohibited the APC from removing Agada and his team until the end of their four-year tenure. However, the APC’s leadership ignored this order, dissolving the Benue executive on Wednesday and appointing a seven-man caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs for the next six months.
The ongoing rift in the Benue APC reflects broader conflicts within the party. Governor Hyacinth Alia has publicly supported the Benjamin Omakolo-led faction, while Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, stands with Agada’s group. The clash of loyalties has intensified the internal strife.
In response to the dissolution, Agada’s faction has announced the results of the primary elections, emphasizing that the process was conducted peacefully and through consensus. Austin Agada, the Benue APC Chairman, praised the orderly conduct of the elections, highlighting the commitment of party members and local stakeholders.
The primary election results for chairmanship candidates are as follows:
- Elias Ogbu (Ado)
- Tarkaa Solomon (Konshisha)
- Chia Terna (Vandeikya)
- Atom Phillip (Kwande)
- Andrew Ocheme (Ogbadibo)
- Ogbole Mathew (Obi)
- Napoleon Otache (Agatu)
- Elias Ogbu (Ado)
- Eje Elvis (Apa)
- Washima Haris (Katsina-Ala)
- Ajeh Ogah (Ohimini)
- Akombo Stephen (Logo)
- Terver Agwaza (Ukum)
- Benjamin Atoza (Gwer)
- Denise China (Gwer West)
- Vincent Apera (Guma)
- James Agudu (Buruku)
- Tyopaase Benjamin (Ushongo)
- Mrs. Ene Ameh (Okpokwu)
- Jonathan Shimgbe (Makurdi)
- Jackson Udama (Oju)
In Katsina-Ala, Simon Aluor, a participant in the primaries, praised the APC for demonstrating orderliness and peace. Similarly, in Otukpo, party members gathered in large numbers to vote for their preferred chairmanship candidate, Oleho Augustine.
