Olisa Agbakoba Urges Acting CJN Kudirat Kekere-Ekun to Implement Radical Judicial Reforms
Olisa Agbakoba, a prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has called on the newly sworn-in acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to drive significant reforms within the country’s judiciary. Agbakoba’s statement underscores the urgent need for transformative changes in Nigeria’s judicial system, which he believes could be achieved under Kekere-Ekun’s leadership.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Kekere-Ekun, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu on Friday at the State House in Abuja, succeeds Justice Kayode Ariwoola, who retired on August 22. Her appointment marks a historic moment as she becomes the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, following Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who served from July 2012 to November 2014.
In his statement, Agbakoba emphasized the importance of reforming the judiciary, noting that such changes have been notably absent since the tenure of the late CJN Dahiru Musdapher. Agbakoba, who served as a consultant on the “Speed of Justice” initiative under Musdapher, recalled the significant reforms proposed during Musdapher’s brief six-month term.
Agbakoba criticized the lack of follow-through on Musdapher’s reforms, despite the establishment of a high-powered committee that produced a comprehensive report on judicial restructuring. He expressed hope that Kekere-Ekun’s tenure could bring about the radical and transformative changes that the judiciary needs, focusing on improving case management and overall court efficiency.
