The Anambra State Police Command successfully rescued a 27-year-old man, Alozie John, from an attempted suicide in the Umunnachi community, located in the Dunukofia Local Government Area. This unfortunate incident arose from his significant debt of 1.2 million Naira to his livestock supplier.
According to a statement released on Saturday by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesman, the rescue took place on Friday after officers intercepted a concerning WhatsApp conversation. The young man, a livestock dealer from Isielu Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, expressed his despair over his financial situation.
On August 23, 2024, the Anambra police acted promptly to save Alozie after learning about his distress through his messages. He had indicated that he ingested a poisonous substance, hoping to end his life due to the overwhelming debt. “He was debriefed, rendered medical assistance, and kept in safe custody for monitoring,” Ikenga stated.
Further details revealed that Alozie John operates a business selling live chickens. After consuming the harmful chemical, he reported feeling no immediate adverse effects, which raised concerns about his mental health. In response to this crisis, the police contacted his mother, who is now assisting with evaluations and facilitating his transfer to a more appropriate care facility.
