Afrobeat star Omah Lay recently shared insights about his upbringing in Nigeria and the significant role his family has played in his success. During an engaging interview on the Zach Sang Show, Omah Lay described his childhood as “beautiful,” highlighting how his humble beginnings shaped his strength and unique perspective in life and music.
Omah Lay emphasized the value of growing up in an environment with fewer resources, stating, “It was beautiful growing up in Nigeria, where you have less. Now that I have more, I can use my experiences and resources in ways that people who have always had more might not. In my opinion, it makes you very strong and unique.” His reflections illustrate how his background has allowed him to approach challenges creatively, infusing his music with authenticity.
When discussing his parents, Omah Lay expressed heartfelt gratitude for his mother’s unwavering support and love. Her belief in him serves as a powerful motivator in his life. “My mum is very proud; she knows I love her so much and she loves me so much too. Her love for me is my fuel,” he shared. Omah Lay attributes much of his drive and determination to his mother’s trust and encouragement, stating that looking back at her sacrifices energizes him.
In addition to his mother’s influence, Omah Lay revealed the musical heritage within his family. He disclosed that his father played the drums and his grandfather was a percussionist for legendary high-life singers. This rich musical background has significantly impacted Omah Lay’s journey as an artist. “Growing up and realizing that your granddad was a percussionist, it’s another validating fact that I was born a musician,” he said, acknowledging how his family’s history has shaped his passion for music.
