Federal Government Launches Aging Desks in 40 MDAs to Enhance Senior Citizens’ Care....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Federal Government has established at least 40 dedicated desks for the care of senior citizens across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This initiative aims to address the diverse needs of the aging population, acknowledging that no single agency can tackle these challenges alone.

During an inaugural training program for Quality Assurance Assessors in the Geriatric Social Care Skills Sector held in Abuja, Dr. Emem Omokaro, Director-General of the National Senior Citizens Center (NSCC), emphasized the importance of collaboration among different agencies. The NSCC’s initiative reflects a commitment to ensuring that senior citizens receive the appropriate care they deserve.

Importance of Collaboration

Dr. Omokaro noted that each ministry has distinct statutory responsibilities, making it crucial for them to work together. While the specific MDAs housing these desks were not disclosed, the NSCC leader highlighted the significance of partnerships in enhancing the care for older persons. She mentioned that the NSCC has engaged in high-level advocacy to promote this collaboration, which includes establishing Memorandums of Understanding with key ministries such as the Ministry of Health and the National Board for Technical Education.

Development of Quality Assurance Systems

The NSCC has also developed a Care Quality Assurance System for Nigeria, featuring national benchmarks and minimum standards for accrediting care settings. Dr. Omokaro stated, “No one person, no single ministry can handle ageing alone… NSCC has dug deep to understand different mandates of relevant agencies.” This new system aims to bring standards and quality to the care of senior citizens, which is crucial for their well-being.

Dr. Omokaro emphasized that older persons deserve care that is appropriate, acceptable, and available. She highlighted the NSCC’s commitment to establishing quality standards through collaboration with professionals in geriatrics and social care. This initiative is a significant step toward improving the lives of senior citizens in Nigeria.

Training and Certification for Care Providers

Dr. Omokaro further stressed that providing quality care for older persons requires skilled professionals. She pointed out the need for training and certification for those involved in geriatric care. “For anyone to have this skill, you need to be trained,” she explained, underscoring the role of training providers in this sector. The current training program includes heads of geriatrics, consultant geriatricians, family physicians, and nurses from various tertiary institutions.

Changing Perceptions of Aging

During her keynote address at the Humanitarian Service Diamond Awards 2024, Dr. Omokaro addressed the negative attitudes often associated with aging. She remarked, “Ageing is what everybody prays for. It calls for celebration.” However, she acknowledged the prevailing pessimism surrounding older persons, who are sometimes viewed as burdens rather than valuable contributors to society. Dr. Omokaro aims to shift this narrative by promoting the capabilities and contributions of the aging population.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has adjusted its gantry price for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), lowering it from ₦1,275 to ₦1,250 per litre, marking a two per cent reduction. This price shift is attributed to a decline in international crude oil prices, which serve as the refinery’s primary feedstock.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    An official from the refinery noted that such adjustments are expected in a deregulated market and emphasized that the company will continue to calibrate prices based on evolving market conditions. Despite this move, current retail prices at many filling stations across Nigeria remain above ₦1,350 per litre, with costs varying by location and marketer.Beyond pricing, the refinery has been credited as a key driver of Nigeria’s improving economic outlook. S&P Global Ratings recently upgraded the country’s long-term foreign- and local-currency sovereign credit ratings from “B-” to “B,” citing factors such as stronger economic growth, increased oil production, and improved external balances. S&P specifically highlighted the operational ramp-up of the Dangote refinery’s 650,000-barrel-per-day facility as a significant contributor to the nation’s enhanced balance-of-payments position and overall economic resilience.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A political war of words has erupted between former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The friction began when Kwankwaso, speaking at his Kano residence, insisted that prominent politicians—including Ganduje—owe their political rise to his mentorship and cannot deny their past loyalty to him. Ganduje, currently performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, responded through his chief of staff, Muhammad Garba, by asserting that Kwankwaso was actually his own protégé. Ganduje highlighted his role in Kwankwaso’s early career, including his support during Kwankwaso’s rise to the House of Representatives and his decision to step down as a gubernatorial candidate in 1998 to serve as Kwankwaso’s deputy.
