Nigeria Braces for Nationwide Strike as Labour Unions Rally Behind NLC President Amid Police Investigation

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), National Union of Railway Workers (NUR), and other affiliates of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) are preparing to embark on a nationwide strike if the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) proceeds with the detention of NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero. This potential strike, which has garnered significant support across various sectors, could severely impact the nation’s economy and public services.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

On Tuesday, the leadership of the NLC issued a stern warning, indicating their readiness to initiate a nationwide strike should the police detain Ajaero. The NLC’s stance follows a summons issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), which has accused Ajaero of several serious charges, including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

The official invitation, detailed in a letter, mandates Ajaero to appear for questioning on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the IRT Complex in Guzape District, Abuja. According to the letter, Ajaero has been identified as a person of interest in an ongoing investigation. The charges have been met with strong opposition from the NLC and its affiliates, who have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and without merit.

A growing number of unions have already pledged their support for the NLC’s planned actions. Key unions backing the strike include the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN). Other unions such as the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Iron and Steel Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ISSAN), Fitters Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (FISSAN), Nigeria Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees (NUAAE), Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), and the National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees (NUPTE) have also declared their support.

In a circular addressed to its local leaders across various port formations in Lagos, Warri, Calabar, and Port Harcourt, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) confirmed their participation in the strike. Deputy Secretary-General of MWUN, Oniha Erazua, emphasized that the directive for an indefinite nationwide strike extends to terminals, jetties, dry ports, and oil export terminals, underscoring the potential widespread impact of the strike.

The notice from MWUN stated, “The decision follows an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NLC held on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, in response to what the Congress describes as a ‘persistent orchestrated attack’ on the labour movement by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). As an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, we are in compliance and have consequently directed all our members to commence the mobilization of our members to effectively ensure their participation in the nationwide indefinite strike and be on red alert.”

The NLC and its affiliates argue that the police investigation into the NLC leadership, including the serious charges levied against Ajaero, is a clear attempt to undermine the labour movement in Nigeria. The strike, which is set to begin at midnight, is seen as a critical protest against what the NLC describes as unfounded and politically driven accusations.

MWUN’s leadership has called on all members to unite in solidarity with the NLC and the broader Nigerian working class, highlighting the urgency and importance of this strike. As the situation unfolds, Nigeria faces the looming prospect of significant disruption across various sectors, with the potential for widespread economic and social consequences.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has adjusted its gantry price for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), lowering it from ₦1,275 to ₦1,250 per litre, marking a two per cent reduction. This price shift is attributed to a decline in international crude oil prices, which serve as the refinery’s primary feedstock.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    An official from the refinery noted that such adjustments are expected in a deregulated market and emphasized that the company will continue to calibrate prices based on evolving market conditions. Despite this move, current retail prices at many filling stations across Nigeria remain above ₦1,350 per litre, with costs varying by location and marketer.Beyond pricing, the refinery has been credited as a key driver of Nigeria’s improving economic outlook. S&P Global Ratings recently upgraded the country’s long-term foreign- and local-currency sovereign credit ratings from “B-” to “B,” citing factors such as stronger economic growth, increased oil production, and improved external balances. S&P specifically highlighted the operational ramp-up of the Dangote refinery’s 650,000-barrel-per-day facility as a significant contributor to the nation’s enhanced balance-of-payments position and overall economic resilience.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Published

on

A political war of words has erupted between former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The friction began when Kwankwaso, speaking at his Kano residence, insisted that prominent politicians—including Ganduje—owe their political rise to his mentorship and cannot deny their past loyalty to him. Ganduje, currently performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, responded through his chief of staff, Muhammad Garba, by asserting that Kwankwaso was actually his own protégé. Ganduje highlighted his role in Kwankwaso’s early career, including his support during Kwankwaso’s rise to the House of Representatives and his decision to step down as a gubernatorial candidate in 1998 to serve as Kwankwaso’s deputy. Ultimately, Ganduje advocated for moving away from “godfather” labels to focus on effective leadership and peace in Kano.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
