CODWA Slams Kogi Governor’s Extravagance: 1,192 Political Appointees Criticized as Wasteful....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy (CODWA) has strongly condemned the recent decision by Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, to appoint 1,192 new political appointees. The advocacy group has labeled the move as an act of extravagance and wastefulness, raising concerns about the governor’s priorities in the face of pressing development challenges.

CODWA expressed its dismay over Governor Ododo’s actions, accusing him of following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Yahaya Bello. Bello, who has faced criticism for similar practices, is currently at large. According to CODWA, Bello left Kogi State “bleeding and in the intensive care unit” due to severe underdevelopment and widespread dehumanization.

In a statement released on Thursday, CODWA’s Executive Director, Comrade Taiwo Otitolaye, questioned the necessity of such a large number of political appointments. “What can Ododo possibly achieve with an outrageous figure of 1,192 political appointees?” he asked. The group sees this as a continuation of the misuse of state resources, which has contributed to Kogi’s poor governance.

The statement also cited Dr. Folashade Ayoade, Secretary to the State Government, who announced the governor’s approval of these appointments. However, Comrade Otitolaye criticized this move as another instance of Kogi State suffering from leaders who lack the vision and political will to drive meaningful development.

Instead of focusing on appointing political aides, Comrade Otitolaye urged Governor Ododo to explore ways to collaborate with the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to revitalize key projects in the state, such as the Ajaokuta Steel Complex. According to CODWA, the state, blessed with abundant natural resources, should not be trapped in a cycle of bad governance that hinders its potential.

Highlighting the state’s ongoing challenges, Otitolaye pointed out the lack of essential infrastructure like good roads, hospitals, and employment opportunities, particularly for the youth and women. Despite Kogi’s wealth in human resources, it remains one of the worst-performing states in promoting human capital development.

CODWA condemned what it described as the “primitive use of state apparatus and resources to the detriment of the state and its citizens.” The group called for an end to this wasteful governance and urged the state government to focus on assembling experts to design and implement a comprehensive Kogi State Development Plan and Strategy that would move the state forward.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
