Adewale Oseni, a commercial bus driver, is seeking justice after experiencing a brutal encounter with a police officer known as Supol Akeem, attached to the Makinde Police Station in Oshodi, Lagos. Oseni’s harrowing story reveals the troubling issue of police misconduct in Nigeria and highlights the urgent need for accountability.

On July 14, around 10 PM, Oseni was returning home after purchasing food for his three young children. He had left home that night after his vehicle broke down and had spent time waiting for repairs. When he encountered the officer, he attempted to explain his situation and show the food he had bought, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. The officer, referred to as “Spider,” allegedly reacted violently, striking Oseni with an iron baseball baton on his leg.

Oseni described his ordeal, stating, “I pleaded with him and showed him the food I went to buy for my children, but he was heady and tough with me.” Despite his attempts to explain, the officer arrested him and took him to the police station, where he was locked up while suffering excruciating pain from his injury.

The following day, Oseni was transferred to the Lagos State Task Force office, where he found himself in court and was sentenced to three weeks in Kirikiri correctional center. “I felt so bad and pained because my children didn’t know my whereabouts or what happened to me,” he lamented.

During his time in prison, Oseni’s leg injury worsened, and he suffered additional injuries from the handcuffs used by the officer. He was released on August 10, but the pain and suffering continued. “Since my release, the pain continued. I couldn’t sleep or eat. I can’t do anything or go to work because of the leg,” he shared.

Oseni’s condition remains critical, with ongoing pain and injuries that have rendered him unable to work and support his family. His children, aged 14, 10, and six, are facing additional hardships following the recent loss of their mother.

In a call for justice, Oseni urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Fayoade, to intervene in his case. He is demanding compensation for the injuries inflicted upon him and the prosecution of the officer involved.

Ebenezer Omejalile, Coordinator of Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network, condemned the actions of Officer Akeem, labeling it as inhumane treatment. He stated, “This is simply police brutality, abuse of office, and human rights abuse against a law-abiding citizen of Nigeria.”

Efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for comments on this incident were unsuccessful, highlighting the ongoing challenges in addressing police misconduct in Nigeria.
