In a tragic incident, at least four officers of the Nigerian Police Force were killed in an attack by gunmen at the Four Corner Junction, Ozalla, located in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. The attack, which occurred while the officers were conducting a routine stop-and-search at a checkpoint, has sent shockwaves through the community.

According to eyewitness reports, the gunmen opened fire on the unsuspecting officers, leaving a scene of chaos and devastation. A video circulated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), by SaharaReporters, showed the lifeless body of a police officer in uniform lying on the expressway, with a police patrol vehicle engulfed in flames nearby.

One user who shared the video wrote, “Policemen just lost their lives at four corner junction, Enugu State…the Expressway that leads to Imo, Abia state from Enugu.” Another user added, “Unknown gunmen attacked the police checkpoint at four corners Enugu today being Sunday and killed policemen… Tomorrow is sit at home in Biafra land if you know you know.”

As of the time of this report, the Police Public Relations Officer for Enugu State, DSP Daniel Nduke, has not responded to calls or messages regarding the incident. Additionally, Mr. Dan Nwomeh, the Special Assistant to Governor Peter Mbah on Media, has yet to provide a comment or confirmation of the attack.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation, including from former Information Minister and 2023 All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate, Dr. Frank Nweke Jr. Dr. Nweke, in a statement on his X handle, described the attack as an act of “wickedness” and expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen officers and the entire Enugu Police Command.

“Earlier today, the Ozalla community in Nkanu West LGA, Enugu, experienced the terror of so-called unknown gunmen who attacked policemen on checkpoint duty at the Four Corner Junction along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. Their patrol vehicle was also destroyed by fire,” Dr. Nweke wrote.

He continued, “It is unacceptable for anyone to die in such a brutal manner while simply performing their duty to protect citizens and maintain public order. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased officers during this difficult time.”
