NLC Convenes Emergency Meeting as President Faces Terrorism Financing Allegations
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urgently called for an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting following the police’s summoning of its National President, Joe Ajaero. The NEC meeting, scheduled for 8:00 AM on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, will bring together all heads of NLC affiliates and state chapter leaders at the Olaitan Oyerinde Hall, Labour House. The meeting was announced in a notice titled “Notice of Emergency National Executive Council Meeting,” signed by NLC Secretary General Emmanuel Ugboaja.
According to the notice, the emergency gathering aims to address the pressing issues surrounding Ajaero’s legal troubles and the implications for the labor movement. The invitation came after the police alleged Ajaero’s involvement in “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, reasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.” These accusations were detailed in a letter dated August 19, 2024, signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Adamu Mu’azu, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence.
Ajaero has been instructed to appear at the IRT Complex, Abbattoir, near Guzape Junction by 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 20. The letter warned that failure to comply would result in the issuance of an arrest warrant.
This development follows a night raid by security agents on July 7 at the NLC national secretariat in Abuja. The police later claimed responsibility for the operation, stating it was part of efforts to gather evidence against an international figure perceived as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy. The NLC, however, dismissed the police’s explanation and condemned the raid, demanding the release of its detained members and the return of seized documents.
The NLC has also expressed concern over what it perceives as government interference in its internal affairs, including proposals to reduce the tenure of trade union leaders.
This crisis has raised significant tensions between the labor union and government authorities, with the NLC poised to respond strongly in defense of its leadership and operational autonomy. The outcome of the emergency NEC meeting could set the stage for the NLC’s next steps in confronting these allegations and protecting its organizational integrity.
